WBALTV:

Baltimore police released new details Tuesday into the shooting deaths of two men, including a lab technician, and the shooting of a police sergeant at a methadone clinic.

City police said officers were called Monday morning to the methadone clinic in the 2100 block of Maryland Avenue, where an exchange of gunfire ensued.

Sgt. Bill Shiflett remains hospitalized after he was shot during a shootout with the alleged shooter, who police identified as Ashanti Pinkney, 49.

Police said Pinkney wounded Shiflett and killed a lab technician, David Caldwell, 52.

“He was a bit of a workaholic. He loved to work,” said Layne Keatts Jr., Caldwell’s brother-in-law.

Caldwell was a phlebotomist who was shot and killed Monday while working at the Man Alive Methadone Clinic.

“He was a good guy,” Keatts said. “I want them to know he was a great guy. He would do anything for anybody, and he deserved a lot better.”

Police said Pinkney was buzzed into the clinic. A witness said he demanded methadone. Shiflett confronted Pinkney and gunfire was exchanged, killing Pinkney, police said.

Shiflett remains in serious but stable condition.
