New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has told New York residents that almost everybody in the state is going to get the coronavirus.

We are seeing some fairly dire projections from politicians about the number of people who could potentially get infected with the coronavirus. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo offered one of the more dire ones yet and lashed out at people who weren’t locking themselves in their homes per his edict.

The Sun:

NEW York Governor Andrew Cuomo has warned that 80% of New York state’s population could become infected with the coronavirus and said the crisis could last as long as nine months.

Cuomo’s stark assessment came hours after Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin warned that the lockdown, currently impacting 80 million people across the country, could last 12 weeks.

Speaking at a press conference Sunday, Cuomo also slammed “arrogant” groups who are still socializing despite orders to stay at home as virus cases soar.

“You would think there is nothing going on in parts of New York City. You would think that it was just a bright, sunny Saturday,” he said.

“I was in these parks. You would not know that anything was going on. This is a mistake. It’s insensitive, it’s arrogant, it’s self-destructive, it’s disrespectful to other people, and it has to stop now.”

Speaking about the length and severity of the crisis, Cuomo said 80% of the state’s population could get sick and the crisis could last till Christmas.

“This is not a short term situation,” he said. “This is not a long weekend. This is not a week. The timeline, no one can tell you. It depends on how we handle it.

“But 40 per cent up to 80 per cent of the population will wind up getting this virus.

“All we’re trying to do is slow the spread, but it will spread, it is that contagious.”

He added: “It is going to be four months, six months, nine months… It’s in that range.”

It isn’t just Cuomo who has been making dire predictions. The head of New Jersey’s health department has said that everyone is going to get it.

New York Post:

New Jersey’s top public health official says everyone, including her, will eventually contract the coronavirus.

“I’m definitely going to get it. We all are,” Judith Persichilli told NJ.com. “I’m just waiting.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom previously said that 56 percent of California residents were going to get it prior to him ordering the whole state closed.

The Hill:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said in a letter to the Trump administration that 56 percent of the state’s population — 25.5 million people — is projected to be infected with the coronavirus over an eight-week period.

With projections this bad, what’s the point of shutting everything down?

Cuomo admitted that these measures are only meant to try and slow down the spread. So he’s basically saying that no matter what we do, there is nothing that can stop the spread.

The cost of shutting everything down has already caused immense economic damage. This economic damage is only introducing new problems on top of the already existing problems. It would seem as if what is being gained from shutting everything down is not providing a whole lot of benefit. Especially if the hospital system is going to get overwhelmed regardless of if everything is shut down or not.

Plus, we already know that the flu has killed more people in the United States than the coronavirus has killed around the world. Much like the flu, the vast majority of people who are dying from it are either the elderly or people who had pre-existing conditions. There are very few healthy people dying from this.

Asia has already managed to deal with this situation fairly effectively which makes the validity of these dire projections a bit questionable.

It’s also likely that the spread of coronavirus will be drastically reduced when the weather gets warmer.

Based on all these factors, it would appear as if these people are grossly exaggerating the extent of the problem for political reasons. Democrat politicians in office are the ones who have implemented the most restrictive measures while also spreading the most doom and hysteria. It would seem as if they are using this situation to inflict as much economic pain as possible because they think doing so will help them defeat the orange man later this year.
