#Ukraine’s swift accession to the European Union would have devastating consequences for European #farmers, the EU’s budget and European security. It serves the best interests of neither Hungary, nor the European Union, therefore we cannot support it! #EUCO pic.twitter.com/ddgKSPEqsX

This is really the same thing as the Republicans vetoing Ukraine aid. It’s an excuse.
RT:
Hungary has vetoed an EU plan to provide tens of billions of euros in assistance to Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Friday. He made the announcement after a tense overnight session of the European Council in Brussels having previously walked out and abstained when other national leaders voted to launch formal talks on Kiev’s bid to join the bloc.
The plan proposed by the European Commission would amend the joint EU budget. Brussels wanted to allocate €50 billion ($54 billion) for Ukraine in spending stretched over four years. Budapest opposed the plan, arguing that any assistance should be for a shorter term and pending renewal after review. Hungary also did not want to fund it through the joint budget.
Orban reported the outcome of that part of the discussion on social media, saying he had vetoed the aid proposal and review of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), the EU’s long-term budget.
Earlier, Orban said he wouldn’t let them join the EU either.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban made clear as he arrived at a high-stakes European Union summit that he would block EU accession talks with Ukraine, standing firmly against the view of other EU leaders.
Orban is blocking both EU membership talks and giving 50 billion euros ($54 billion) in financial aid for Kyiv from the EU budget, much to the exasperation of his EU partners at a crucial time for Ukraine.
The summit comes after a Ukrainian counter-offensive failed to make major gains and with the Biden administration so far unable to get a $60 billion aid package for Kyiv through Congress.
“There is no reason to negotiate membership of Ukraine now,” Orban said as he arrived at the Brussels summit.
“We have to come back later on, revert to that issue again when (preconditions are) fulfilled by the Ukrainians,” he said.
He also mentioned a European Parliament election next June, saying the bloc should “behave democratically” and await a new political consensus that would emerge, potentially signalling a months-long delay to any start of talks on Ukraine.
Officials and diplomats said they were in any case braced for a tough series of summit meetings that could go late into Friday night or even into the weekend.
All of the EU’s 27 national leaders except Orban have backed the start of accession talks.
If EU leaders approve the start of membership talks and the four-year financial package, Kyiv will be able to claim a geopolitical victory. Failure to agree would likely be greeted by Moscow as a sign of faltering Western support for Ukraine.
They obviously don’t want that.
There is no reason they would now that Russia did not collapse. The idea was a collapse of the Putin government, a breakup of Russia, and then absorption of the whole territory into the EU. That did not happen, it’s not going to happen, the Ukraine is just a massive liability, and there is no reason to keep giving them money.
Orban is just someone the EU can point at so they don’t have to explain the lunatic decisions they made in starting this two year war that killed an entire generation of young men in the Ukraine and actually has massively benefited the stated enemy.
Orban probably really does prefer to cozy up to Russia at this point, as it’s just common sense for him to get as much as he can for his country from these two powers and then side with the winner. So everything works out for everyone.
Except the Ukrainians.
They got a pretty raw deal.
