Pope Francis said on Sunday that people are more important than the economy, as countries decide how quickly to reopen their countries from coronavirus lockdowns.
Francis made his comments, departing from a prepared script, at the first noon address from his window overlooking St. Peter’s Square in three months as Italy’s lockdown drew to an end.
“Healing people, not saving (money) to help the economy (is important), healing people, who are more important than the economy,” Francis said.
“We people are temples of the Holy Spirit, the economy is not,” he said.
Francis did not mention any countries. Many governments are deciding whether to reopen their economies to save jobs and living standards, or whether to maintain lockdowns until they are sure the virus is fully under control.
The pope’s words were met with applause by hundreds of people in the square, many of whom wore masks and kept several meters from each other. The square was reopened to the public last Monday. Normally tens of thousands attend on a Sunday.
The last time the pope delivered his message and blessing from the window was March 1, before Italy, where more than 33,000 people have died from the virus, imposed a lockdown. The last restrictions will be lifted on Wednesday.
We already know at this point, and governments are admitting, that more people are going to die as a result of the lockdown than would have died from the virus.
Moreover, people dying “from the virus” was like, people in their 80s and 90s, almost exclusively. Mostly, those people are ready to go. You’re talking about a few months being taken off someone’s life.
They made this joke in the opening sketch of the latest RedLetterMedia show, and did it quite well.
If a 25-year-old dies of suicide or a drug overdose, it is much more tragic than an 85-year-old dying of the flu, in part because of “years lost,” and in part because a young person dying a death of despair is just a lot sadder than an old person who is ready to go finally going.
As I’ve written in trying to address the insanity of an agenda to keep people in their 80s and 90s alive for a few more months, most people view old people dying as a blessing. As people get into their 90s, their lives get really difficult, and it’s only because of modern science that they are alive at all. In times past, they would have simply lived the span of years it says in the Bible that people are supposed to live.
We are looking at the biggest unemployment crisis in all of human history. That is going to lead to mass drug use. It’s going to lead to mass divorce and suicide. There will also be a lot of weird gruesome murders and other kinds of strange deaths as a result of the mental health crisis this is going to create. This is going to be an absolute horror show, created by a bizarre plan to stop old people from dying of the flu.
Moreover, because the insane decision was made to shut down all hospitals for any reason other than coronavirus, and this led to completely empty hospitals for months on end, the medical industry is going to have serious problems, which means people are not going to get proper healthcare in the future. This is also going to lead to deaths.
Pope Francis is a disgusting person, and he’s mean. I’ve seen him attack Asians. I don’t believe he cares about human life and in fact I believe he takes joy in death.
