A Mildenhall man has been found guilty of racially abusing a Chinese couple in a supermarket.
Richard Dale, 53, of Chestnut Close, made offensive comments to the pair before inviting the man to go outside with him “to see what you are made of,” Ipswich Crown Court was told on Tuesday.
Dale had denied an offence of racially aggravated harassment, but it took a jury just over an hour to convict him.
The incident on April 2 last year happened in the Tesco supermarket in Newmarket’s Fordham Road.
Staff from the store told the court how a Chinese man and woman had gone to the customer service desk to raise concerns about Dale’s behaviour.
Dale claimed that the couple had knocked into him with a shopping basket and sworn at him in Chinese. He said he understood what was being said from his Army service.
Tesco duty manager Robert Spencer, who was called to deal with the incident, said Dale was swearing and shouting.
“He was very aggressive. It was like he really wanted to hit someone. He was very angry.”
He said the Chinese couple appeared to be scared and the woman was crying,
Customer services manager Janice Mitchell who witnessed the incident told the court that Dale had said: “I don’t believe you are chucking out an Englishman over a foreigner.”
Giving evidence, Dale accepted that he had been upset but denied making any racist remarks.
Judge John Devaux told Dale that he would be granted bail until he returned to court on February 25 to be sentenced.
