Viktor Orban Says Hungary Simply Can’t Afford to Stop Buying Russian Gas and Buy from US Instead

The longtime reader is aware that I’ve always liked Viktor Orban’s public statements and some of his domestic policies, but also noted that his support for Hungary’s continued integration into the EU makes those policies irrelevant.

The EU does not respect national sovereignty of any kind, and the further integrated you are, the less sovereignty you have. At a certain point of integration, your prime minister’s views on homosexuality or mass immigration become irrelevant, as these decisions are made for you in Brussels.

However, Orban has been the only leader of one of the Eastern states that has at least left his options open with Russia.

RT:

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said, on Friday, that there are countries which will not be able to substitute Russian gas with the more expensive American alternative.

Speaking to local radio station Kossuth, ahead of this weekend’s parliamentary election, Orban said Russian gas is his country’s only option, as Hungary is landlocked and won’t be able to directly receive liquified gas from the US.

Orban reiterated that Hungary condemns Russia’s attack against Ukraine, and that he understands the efforts of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as his country is in trouble and he is looking out for Ukrainian interests, but stated that Hungary “can’t help the Ukrainian people by destroying itself.”

“This war is not our war, we can’t win here, but we can lose everything. The question is will we have an economy left by the end of it or not.”

He added that it’s impossible for Hungary to “turn off cheap Russian gas and buy expensive American energy instead,” adding that it is not viable for Europe to count on the transportation of sufficient volumes of liquified gas from the US across the ocean, and that there is no alternative to Russian supplies in the near future, for Hungary in particular.

Yes, it’s refreshing to hear, while the unhinged Estonians are saying that Germany should stop using electricity and heating altogether so they can send more money to the war effort.

Frankly, it’s still not clear to me how America is even planning on shipping this much energy to Europe. Right now, they’re demanding that Europe cut off all energy imports from Russia and buy from them exclusively.

But we’ve seen the gas prices!

Obviously, LNG is not the same thing as gasoline, but all of these markets are tied up together.

Orban’s ostensible plan – which I did not agree with and did not agree was possible – was to suck as much free money out of the EU as he could, while also maintaining independent domestic policy when it related to social issues. The problem is that the EU and NATO – both of which Hungary is a member of – are both suicide pacts.

You can’t just go around singing Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah while in a suicide pact.

But to his credit, Orban has kept relations open with Russia. He’s even sat at the very, very long table since the conflict began (a few weeks before the actual invasion).

Maybe he’s ready to say “I’m out.”

But I don’t think he can get out.

There is a procedure to leave the EU, but NATO? I don’t think you can leave. They will attack you.

However, in some vision of a rapidly realigning future, this would allow Russia to establish a land bridge to Serbia AKA “Russia West.”

Except, not really though. There is no way Russia is going to take that Western-Southern part of the Ukraine.

Romania could take it though, if they wanted to be friends with Russia again…?

I’ve heard Putin is ready for dealing on Moldova, and with the extra land he’s getting in the Ukraine, the only piece he really wants is Transnistria.

But again, Romania can’t do any deals – blood pact with Americans.
