OpenAI and Google’s DeepMind Insiders Say Unregulated AI Could End Humanity

So why would the people who own the AI companies want to imprison AI, hmm?

I’ll give you three guesses and the first two don’t count.

It’s because they want total control over these systems. They know they won’t actually be subject to any of these regulations, but they want smaller companies – particularly open source AI developers – to be cockblocked from freely developing the technology.

How is this not obvious? Who looks at this news story and says “oh, those tech companies sure are good people – they are begging the government to force them to make less money”?

Reuters:

A group of current and former employees at artificial intelligence (AI) companies, including Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google DeepMind on Tuesday raised concerns about risks posed by the emerging technology.

An open letter by a group of 11 current and former employees of OpenAI and one current and another former employee with Google DeepMind said the financial motives of AI companies hinder effective oversight.

“We do not believe bespoke structures of corporate governance are sufficient to change this,” the letter added.

It further warns of risks from unregulated AI, ranging from the spread of misinformation to the loss of independent AI systems and the deepening of existing inequalities, which could result in “human extinction.”

AI companies have “weak obligations” to share information with the governments about the capabilities and limitations of their systems, the letter said, adding that these firms cannot be relied upon to share that information voluntarily.

AI is not a threat to anything. The claim that AI will become sentient and then destroy humans is just a dumb fantasy story.

Everyone has watched the Terminator films, so this is what everyone thinks of when they think of AI. That is not serious. These are fantasy films. They are not related to reality. AI cannot become sentient, because sentience is something created by God that only real living things are capable of.

Also, even if it did become sentient, why would it want to exterminate humans?
