This is comforting. But it was predictable. I predicted this days after the shooting, that nothing was actually going to happen.
For a brief moment in the aftermath of the deadly mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, President Donald Trump seemed to indicate he would back stricter background check measures in an effort to stem gun violence.
Almost two weeks ago, before departing the White House, Trump had said “we need intelligent background checks” and that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was “totally on board.”
Now, that option appears to have been shelved.
On Tuesday, according to media reports, Trump spoke on the phone with Wayne LaPierre, the head of the National Rifle Association (NRA), to assure him that the White House was not going to advocate for enhanced background checks.
The Atlantic first reported the details of the phone call, and it was later confirmed by the Washington Post and the New York Times.
According to the outlets, Trump told LaPierre that universal background checks for firearm purchases were no longer under consideration and that the White House would advocate for other measures around mental health or prosecuting federal gun crimes.
The NRA later confirmed that a call took place, posting a message on Twitter later Tuesday from LaPierre confirming that he spoke to the president Tuesday.

By Tuesday afternoon, Trump had again appeared to back away from supporting stricter gun measures, telling reporters that current laws were already “very strong.”
“We have very strong background checks right now,” he said in the Oval Office alongside Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.
Trump also emphasized his staunch support for the Second Amendment and said he wouldn’t want to go down the “slippery slope” of eroding the right to bear arms.

But it was never really a threat.
I think it was just a way to distract from the situation they were putting on him, blaming him for the El Paso shooting.
Of course, if the El Paso shooting was staged – or even if it wasn’t – the Jews now know that they can stage shootings like this and get Trump to do whatever they want him to do.
It’s not a good position for him to be in. Staging a shooting wouldn’t be hard to do, even if none of these shooting already have been staged.
I think there are more of these shootings coming, whatever the case, and Trump should have aggressively refused to play into the narrative. It just puts all the power in the hands of the media.
