This is funny. I’m glad Trump is still funny.

Variety:

President Donald Trump took aim at “Parasite’s” historic Oscar wins at a Colorado rally on Thursday.

“How bad were the Academy Awards this year?” he asked, prompting jeers from the crowd. “Did you see it?”

“The winner is… a movie from South Korea! What the hell was that all about?” he went on. “We got enough problems with South Korea with trade. On top of that, they give them best movie of the year? Was it good? I don’t know. Let’s get ‘Gone With the Wind.’ Can we get ‘Gone With the Wind’ back, please?”

“So many great movies…” he bemoaned before again mocking, “the winner is from South Korea!”

“I thought it was best foreign film, right? Best foreign movie,” he said. “Did this ever happen before?”

I see where Trump is coming from. The Academy is supposed to be an American organization, which deals with American films. And it is kind of weird to give the best picture award to a Korean film, given that they have a “best foreign film” category already, which Parasite also won.

That said, even as a virulent xenophobe, I didn’t have the same reaction as Donald Trump. I don’t know if this is because I’m a gook lover or just because I hate Hollywood.

I didn’t see any of these movies that were nominated for Best Picture, other than Joker and The Irishman. I liked Joker a lot, but if examined in terms of pure storytelling, it had a whole lot of problems. The Irishman was better as a work of art.

I haven’t see Parasite, but I assume it was more sound in terms of storytelling, and was probably legitimately better than the rest of these movies.

And if we’re being honest, they’re all foreign films, aren’t they?

Israel is a foreign country.

Sam Mendes (1917), James Mangold (Ford v Ferrari), Todd Phillips (Joker), Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story) and Amy Pascal (Little Women) are all Israeli nationals.

The only films that weren’t made by Israeli nationals were Parasite, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Irishman.

Probably The Irishman deserved it and simply didn’t get it because it was all white people. Maybe that’s what Trump was trying to say, and he didn’t just say “It should have been The Irishman” because Robert De Niro hates him and is always talking about him.

Parasite actually looks kind of good and I might watch it.

But whatever. It’s funny. I’m glad Trump is still funny. At least there’s that.
