U.S. officials have confirmed to CBS News that plans have been approved for a series of strikes over a number of days against targets — including Iranian personnel and facilities — inside Iraq and Syria. The strikes will come in response to drone and rocket attacks targeting U.S. forces in the region, including the drone attack on Sunday that killed three U.S. service members at the Tower 22 base inside Jordan, near the Syrian border.
Speaking at the Pentagon Thursday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters that the U.S. won’t tolerate attacks on American troops.
Apparently they will.
“This is a dangerous moment in the Middle East,” Austin said, noting that Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip and attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen on commercial shipping in the Red Sea were also happening in the region. “We will continue to work to avoid a wider conflict in the region, but we will take all necessary actions to defend the United States, our interests and our people, and we will respond when we choose, where we choose and how we choose.”
Weather will be a major factor in the timing of the strikes, the U.S. officials told CBS News, as the U.S. has the capability to carry out strikes in bad weather but prefers to have better visibility of selected targets as a safeguard against inadvertently hitting civilians who might stray into the area at the last moment.

John Bolton has been getting a lot of play. He said Biden is “paralyzed with fear.”
You know, Glenn Greenwald always does a bit about how these people say it’s brave to start wars that you and your kids won’t fight in. He points out that Bolton, in particular, was never even in the military. But he doesn’t actually understand what is being discussed.
Joe Biden is not fearful that he’s going to be killed by Iranians, just like Bolton isn’t brave because he’s going to go on a mission with the Navy Seals. “Bravery” and “cowardice” in this use is relative to people’s reputations.
Bolton claims he is “brave” because he’s willing to go out in public and advocate for policies everyone hates, totally without shame. There is a kind of bravery there, when you think about it for a minute. Imagine being this guy, constantly demanding people go die in these wars for Jews, and then walking around in public. Imagine that the waiters at the swanky New York bistros he attends are thinking “this guy is a piece of shit,” and probably spitting in his food.
Just so, Joe Biden doesn’t want to be forever known as the man who completely destroyed America by losing several consecutive wars. Insofar as Joe Biden is even conscious of anything at all, he’s conscious of his public image.
Really though, that doesn’t have much to do with it (if anything at all). The real situation is that Jake Sullivan (homo) and Antony Blinken (Jew), who make up two-thirds of the American foreign policy decision-making team (the third being Jew Victoria Nuland), don’t want to blow all of America’s military might by going to war with Iran directly.
This is what I predicted, actually. Everyone was saying “they’re going to bomb Iran,” and I was like “I doubt that.” It’s obvious on its face that there is no way for America to win a war with Iran. America just lost a war against Afghanistan, and the Iranians are really just a bigger and more advanced version of the Taliban. They are religious people who believe that God is on their side, so they are willing to take risks and confront people on principle.
Conversely, Americans are stupid, fat, godless cowards.

There are a lot of important Iranian targets outside of Iran. So there are things the US government could do within these parameters that would escalate the situation. It’s just unlikely that they will do any major strikes, because if they were going to do that, they would just hit inside of Iran itself for the symbolic value.
Right now, Biden is being attacked as a loser and a coward for not starting a war, and bombing inside of Iran would lessen that.
It’s clear that these people just don’t want to escalate, because they know they don’t have the resources.
